Goa Gajah Temple | Mysterious Elephant Cave of Indonesia

Located on the island of Bali near Ubud in Indonesia, is this mysterious ancient sanctuary and Hindu archaeological site known as Goa Gajah or the Elephant Cave.

The actual history of the structure is shrouded in mystery and the most common belief is that it was built for spiritual meditation for Hindu priests or maybe a hermitage. It could have also had some specific ritual function.

Some say it got its name from the Hindu god Ganesh, who has a statue inside, but the name likely comes from its close proximity to the Petanu River, also know as the Elephant River.

But what's inside this small opening in the natural rock, who built it and when?
