U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and other officials announced Tuesday that scientists for the first time produced more energy in a fusion reaction than the energy used to start the process, resulting in a "net energy gain."
"Simply put, this is one of the most impressive scientific feats of the 21st century," Granholm said.
Officials said the "significant scientific breakthrough" in nuclear fusion research moves us one step closer to developing a clean source of power.
